Developers Start Cranking Out Yahoo BOSS Apps

By David A. Utter

Yahoo's opening of the Build your Own Search Service (BOSS) pulled plenty of developers to the challenge of creating projects that tap the resources of Yahoo Search.

Sports fans and news junkies among others took the initiative offered by Yahoo Search with its BOSS project. Its debut in July presented application developers with the chance to tap Yahoo's sizable search index and use it for their mashups and creations.

The Yahoo Search blog pointed out a quartet of these today. They range from the swiftly constructed multi-column display of 4HourSearch to the Java-powered 3D visualization of Tianamo.

Developers at Dipity took top marks from the Daylife Developer Challenge with their creation, Newsline, a timeline comparison of news-making topics.

With the NFL season, and thus the latest edition of fantasy football, starting soon, some developers decided to crank up efforts on the presently-alpha edition of PlayerSearch. Those who reasonably wish to relive the New York Giants' Super Bowl glory by catching up with news, blog posts, and videos on Eli Manning may do so easily.

And yes, you can search for news on new Jets starting quarterback Brett Favre too.
